A Book About Roses by S. Reynolds Hole 1880
A Book About Roses, How to Grow and Show Them, by S. Reynolds Hole.
Seventh edition, published in 1880 by William Blackwood and Sons.
Topics include causes of failure and success; positioning, soil, and manures; arrangement and selection; garden roses; rose shows and exhibitions; and selected and new roses.
As is typical with 19th-century botany books, there is lots of poetry sprinkled throughout!
The spine is especially beautiful, great for displaying on your shelf. Cloth cover with gilt roses and lettering. Some scuffing to front board. Spine is near perfect! Light bumping to corners. Spotting and foxing to outer edges of pages and along outside edges of text block. Light cracking/weakening to front and back hinges; binding is good but should be handled with care to prevent further weakening.
322 pages with a small catalog in the back.
Large lithographed rose frontispiece; no other illustrations.
